Dumpster FAQs
These days you see dumpsters taking away all sorts of debris and junk from construction sites. You’ve probably have seen one across the street from a neighbor doing some home renovations or roof replacement. But like magic, the next day it’s gone. How do they transport these dumpsters around town? This is what makes a roll-off dumpster such an ideal disposal system.
It’s carried on the back of a specially built truck that has a sled-like chassis. The dumpster is slid backward off the back end. The rest of the unloading is basically gravity and the truck drives off slowly lowering the dumpster down. There’s a chain that’s connected to the sled and keeps the dumpster from clunking-down suddenly. Loading the dumpster back onto the truck is done the same method only in reverse.
The first step is to determine what size dumpster you want and for how long. You can call us to ask questions if you’re unsure. We can help you if you have a ballpark estimate. Once the size is determined you need to estimate how many days you’ll need the container. You must also specify what kind of waste you’re throwing out. Does it relate to landfill items or is it roofing material? Asphalt shingles need to go to a different landfill.
The next step is the date when you need it delivered and picked up. Your address and contact information are also taken down. After that, we’ll give you an estimate for the services. Since the job isn’t completed just yet, final aspects of the dumpster pick-up are not yet determined. This can include fees for overloading a dumpster past its weight capacity or items that are subject to dumping fines.
Once the order is confirmed, a deposit is required to finalize the order. We can send you an invoice via e-mail or when the dumpster is dropped off. Final billing is completed on the day you order our Phoenix dumpster service. You can pay through a credit card through our online service.
Unless you’re doing something that needs small to large-scale material removal, always factor in how much is being removed. This comes down to the number of tons a dumpster can hold. Each size is rated for a limit on tons being hauled. You also need to pay taxes and fees for materials that need special disposal.
As you can expect, the larger the dumpster the more stuff that goes inside. But choosing the best size is a question that isn’t so hard to answer. It depends on how you measure the amount of stuff you want to throw away. For most of us, we don’t look at mass in a matter of square feet; but a dumpster does. So to help you to find out which size is best, we tend to calculate average room sizes for reference. Below is a brief description of our small of roll-off dumpster sizes;
10-yard dumpster
This is the average weekend warrior dumpster for light clean-up. It can hold up to 1 ton (2000lbs) and measures 14′ x 7′ x 3′. This size dumpster is good for general-purpose cleanup, garage junk, backyard foliage disposal, and home refurbishing. You have enough room to put a room or two of discarded material into this container.
15-yard dumpster
When you need to do a couple of rooms-worth of junk, this size is perfect. This holds 2 tons worth of stuff (4000lbs) and measures 14′ x 7′ x 4′. Home renovation projects or extensive yard work is perfect for this size container. The extra foot added to the edge of this dumpster works better if you stack debris carefully rather than throwing-in stuff randomly.
20-yard dumpster
This size container sounds bigger overall but is the same height as a 15-yard dumpster. What you get here is the length rather than anything else. It’s also better that you can walk right up to the edge and toss stuff inside. This holds 4 tons with (8000lbs) limit on junk and material. The total size is 22′ x 8′ x 4′ and has a little bit more girth for larger loads to have hauled away in Phoenix.
Of course, there is always going to be the issue of how you put stuff into the dumpster. Carefully stacked items just like in the video game Tetris will allow you to put more items inside the dumpster. Here's a breakdown of each dumpster size;
Some projects need to bring out the big guns and this can include house renovations, complete roof replacement, or a combination of both. You might need a 30-yard or roofing dumpster for extensive jobs. If you’ve got a very big job, we can arrange for a 40-yard dumpster upon request.
Roofing dumpster
This is when you have a roofing replacement that needs a dumpster that can handle lots of old asphalt shingles. But that’s not all since this container is good for other roof debris including insulation, wood scraps, and roof planks. This container isn’t measured strictly by size but by the weight. Asphalt shingles are heavy and for this, you need a container that measures that weight by tons.
You’ll need to calculate how many roofing squares cover your roof to get the right container weight limit.
30-yard dumpster
The big bruiser of the dumpster family is an incredible container for the maximum capacity. It can hold up to 4 tons and measures 22′ x 8′ x 5.5′. When you’re gutting a house for remodeling, this is what you’ll want to order. It’s perfect for broken down walls, sheetrock, and construction garbage. The height of this size dumpster is ideal at times when conventional dumpsters aren’t holding material based on mass.
Most rental companies will have different rules about pick-up and delivery. Of course, these are costs that include the use of driven vehicles. Though, we’re upfront about these costs from the start when you order a drop-off and pick-up service. They are a minimal service charge that includes placing a container and taking it away. The level of care that goes into both ensures that your property is not damaged.
The rental price is part of the delivery and pick-up, so there’s no cost added when the dumpster is picked up. As part of the rental agreement, you are liable for paying fees for items that aren’t allowed in the dumpster. If these are hidden inside the junk they will be collected separately at the landfill site and returned back to you. The fee is determined by the amount of unwanted waste and the number of miles traveled.
All trucks are weighed at a weigh station and will impose further fees for more weight than the dumpster allows. These extra fees are stated in the rental contract. There can also be added rental costs due to needing the dumpster for longer. These are not late fees and are reasonable daily rental costs.
Most rentals for a dumpster depend on how long you need the dumpster. If it’s a weekend project you can ask for a 2 or3-day rental. You might need to reserve a container for up to 7 days. Construction projects can allow for dumpsters to be left as long as 30 days in special requests.
Well, it’s not like you’re going to be rolling out oil drums full of radioactive material from your basement… But there is a certain amount of what is considered legal to put inside a dumpster. Be sure to let AZ Junk Removal know what you are throwing out. These materials need to be transported to dumping sites that are intended for garbage or junk. Materials such as old paint cans, left-over chemicals, fertilizers, asbestos, and medical waste are not allowed.
This isn’t limited to air conditioners and refrigerators, and hot water tanks. Tires and materials that are contaminated aren’t allowed either. If you intend to dump only dirt it cannot be mixed with wood or other trash. Just ask AZ Junk Removal for a complete list of what can and cannot be dumped. There is always a solution we can offer for removing your junk in other ways.
Most dumpsters have doors but they can be tricky to open for most people. To open the back end you must remove a safety chain by releasing the safety latch. After this, the chain is removed from a slot. There is a lever that opens the two latches holding the door closed. You can hold the back of the door with one hand and lift the latch with your free hand. After this, the dumpster door is free to open with both of your hands now.
Depending on what you are doing, you can decide where the dumpster is going to be placed. For messy jobs, you’ll need it closer to your work or cleanup project. Some folks don’t mind the dumpster parked in the driveway or even on the curbside. You might need to ask your local city hall authorities what is allowed. Many city ordinances won’t allow curbside dumpsters for safety reasons or you may need to request for a permit.
In that case, you need to decide where it goes on your property. In any case, is there anything better to protect your driveway from scuffing or scratching? Perhaps you have spent a pretty penny adding a decorative driveway surface? One of the better solutions is adding a cushion such as old sections of carpet, moving blankets, or thick cardboard. As the dumpster is lowered off the rig, these can be slid into place at the back end.
The last section to come down can have some padding as well. If you know there’s going to be a lot of stuff going into the dumpster, this is a consideration. If you decide to put it on your lawn, there’s going to be sunken grass as a result. Additionally, any driveway that has a thin concrete covering is a risk for cracking. This may be all the more reason to have it curbside if your city and town allow this.
You’ve all heard this story, as an open dumpster is an open invitation for everyone on the block. You wake up in the morning and there’s always less room in your dumpster to put stuff. So what can you do to prevent unauthorized dumping? If you have a trap that can go over the top and is tied down, this usually works. We recommend a night vision camera that watches who is putting in stuff at night. It never hurts to put a large sign on your container that gives a warning. Mentioning there is a camera also works wonders to detour those who dump illegally. With footage that is filmed, you can go to the police with your proof. If they are identified by you, they can be given a fine by the police based on your town’s laws.
